Metabolic screen testing
Your consultant will ask you to carry out metabolic creening to find out the composition of your kidney stones. This is done by collecting all the urine that you pass on four consecutive twenty-four hour periods.
We will supply the containers you need to use, and you should then follow the instructions below:-
1. On the first morning, if you were starting the collection at, for example, 9.00 a.m., you should pass urine at 9.00 a.m. into the lavatory, since that urine was made in the preceding twenty-four hours. Everything up to and including the 9.00 a.m. specimen of the next morning should go into one container. (Note that the first container contains acid).
2. You should repeat this on the second, third and fourth days, remembering the second specimen goes into the second acid container. However, you should not be discarding the first specimen at 9.00 a.m. but putting it into the collection from the previous day.
3. You should maintain your normal food and fluid intake during the collection so that the chemistry of your bladder urine reflects your normal dietary habits.
4. Please return the four bottles to the Pathology Department at Capio Reading Hospital during opening hours (9.00 – 5.00 Monday to Friday.) and within three hours of your last specimen. It seems to work best if you start on a Thursday morning with your last specimen being Monday morning.
