Kidney stone prevention

Drink plenty of waterThis is some general advice to help those patients who have had kidney stones and who wish to prevent the formation of any more.

  • Drink enough fluid to maintain a urine output of 2.5 litres per day. There is some evidence that cranberry juice is beneficial and we suggest that you take some of your fluid input in this form.
  • Aim to have a diet that contains 750mg calcium each day.
  • Restrict your intake of foods and fluids that contain oxalate.
  • Avoid adding salt to your diet, although it is perfectly reasonable to use it sparingly when cooking.
  • Restrict your protein intake to one modest sized portion of red meat, fish or poultry per day.
