Description: Vasectomy

Code:  N1710

Reading Urology Partnership offers a vasectomy service performed under local anaesthetic using the no-scalpel technique. The procedure takes place in our minor ops room at the Mansion Out-Patients Department at The Berkshire Independent Hospital.

Referral

You may have contacted us directly about having a vasectomy, and in this case we will need a referral letter from your GP which can be faxed to 0118 902 8061.
If you GP refers you to us, we will contact you to arrange an appointment.

How much will it cost?

Vasectomies are not covered by medical insurance.  We make a charge of £360 which covers a single visit where you will meet your consultant and have the procedure. The whole visit takes about 30-40 minutes, and appointments are offered during our normal clinics, usually on a Friday.

Next steps

To arrange an appointment, please contact us on 0118 902 8097 or use our contact form.

Once we have arranged your appointment we will ask The Berkshire Independent Hopsital to send you a Fixed Price Quote for the procedure fee which should be paid prior to attending, or on the day if you pay by credit or debit card.

Your appointment should take about 30-40 minutes in total and you will be able to go home afterwards.  You should bring a companion with you so that they can drive you home.  We advise that you plan for a couple of days rest prior to returning to work, possibly more if you are in a manual occupation.

Semen samples

You should arrange to provide two samples of semen for analysis at around 12 and 15 weeks after the operation. Samples can be analysed at the Berkshire Independent Hospital (at £17.50 per sample) or possibly at your GP’s surgery.

Until you are told by your GP that you are sperm free you should continue to use another method of contraception.

Instructions for providing a semen sample

1. The specimen should be collected after a period of sexual abstinence of at least 3 days but not longer than 7 days.

2. The specimen should be obtained by masturbation and ejaculated into a clean wide necked plastic container. The container should be warmed in the palm of your hand to minimise the effect of cooling.

3. The specimen should NOT be collected by the use of a condom or by ‘coitus interruptus’.

4. It is important that the whole specimen is collected.

5. The specimen should be clearly labelled with your name, the date and time of ejaculation.

6. The specimen should be delivered to The Mansion, Out-Patients Department, in a clear plastic bag with a pathology form, within one hour of collection and kept insulated during transportation.

7. Delivery to the department must be within the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.
